What are the different forms and recommended dosages for Shatavari?

Shatavari can be consumed in different forms and may include:

Powder/Churna:

  • The churna can be taken along with milk, honey, or lukewarm water.
  • The recommended dosage is ¼ to ½ teaspoon, twice a day.

Syrup/Arishta:

  • Syrup is the decoction form of churna with certain additives.
  • The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 teaspoons a day.

Capsule/Tablet/Vati:

  • The capsule or tablet form can be taken with water or milk after a meal.
  • The recommended dosage is 1 or 2 vati, twice a day.
  1. Juice/Kashayam:
  • Some water is added to shatavari powder and consumed on an empty stomach.
  • The recommended dosage is 2 to 3 teaspoons in a day.

Paste/Avaleha:

  • This form can be consumed with water.
  • The recommended dosage is ¼ to ½ teaspoon in a day.

The following precautions are taken while using shatavari:

  • Avoid consumption of shatavari if you are consuming any medication or herb having a diuretic effect (increased urine production). This is because shatavari also has diuretic properties.
  • Avoid shatavari if you have low blood sugar, as it can further lower your blood sugar levels.
  • Avoid the consumption of shatavari if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. 
  • Shatavari consumption is generally considered to be safe during pregnancy. Shatavari helps in bringing about the following benefits during pregnancy:
  • Anti-abortifacient effect: It helps in the prevention of threatened abortion.
  • Antenatal care: It helps the unborn baby to grow in strength and have a nicely proportioned body and complexion.
  • Taking care of the pregnant woman: Shatavari helps in increasing the strength, mental fitness, erythropoietic (red blood cells production) quality of a pregnant woman, and also fights pre-eclampsia (a serious complication characterized by high blood pressure in pregnancy) and reduces the chances of perinatal deaths (death of the fetus).
