Symptoms of STDs in women – In many cases, STDs do not cause noticeable symptoms in women. Although common symptoms of STDs include-
- Pain or discomfort during sex or urination.
- Wounds, blisters, or rashes on or around the vulva, anus, buttocks, thighs, or mouth.
- Abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding.
- Itching in or around the vagina.
Symptoms of STD in men – Men can contract an STD without developing symptoms. But some STDs cause obvious symptoms. Common symptoms of STDs are as follows-
- Pain or discomfort during sex or urination.
- Wounds, blisters, or rashes on or around the penis, testicles, anus, buttocks, thighs, or mouth.
- Abnormal discharge or bleeding from the penis.
- Painful or swollen testicles.
Types of STDs
Many different types of infections can cause sexually transmitted diseases. Let us further explain the common types of STDs.
- Gonorrhea – A bacterium called gonorrhea rapidly infects women and men. It is a predominant type of STD that is transmitted through oral sex. The infection causes pain and inflammation. It is also known as gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can spread to the throat, eyes, uterus, anus, urethra. If Neisseria gonorrhea spreads in the blood, then symptoms like fever and skin bruises are seen.
- HPV (Human Papillomavirus) – HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that can occur to both men and women. When HPV infection starts, warts start forming in the person’s genitalia. Also, there are problems in hands and feet that cause stress. HPV infection is spread from one person to another especially due to sexual intercourse. Apart from this, the genitals touch and spread to other parts. Many times a person is not aware that he has contracted HPV infection.
- Chlamydia – Chlamydia is one of the sexually transmitted diseases. It is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. This bacterium causes infection around the cervix or in the urine duct, or anus. Chlamydia is caused by unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. This infection can also transmit from mother to child. Men who have Chlamydia experience a burning sensation in the penis while urinating. Also, itching or irritation occurs in the penis.
- Herpes – Herpes is the short name for herpes simplex virus (HSV). This virus has two main parts, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both of these are called sexually transmitted infections. This is a very common STD. HSV-1 mainly causes oral herpes, which is responsible for cold sores. HSV-1 can also pass from one person’s mouth to another person’s genitals during oral sex. When this happens, it can produce HSV-1. HSV-2 primarily causes herpes in the genitalia. Symptoms include blisters or sores. In the case of genital herpes, these lesions develop on or around the genitals. Oral herpes may develop on or around the person’s mouth.

- Always think about safety before having sex. It also depends on which partner you are having sex with.
- Female condoms do not provide much safety as men’s condoms do. So, men should use condoms during intercourse. There are many types of condoms in which latex condoms provide safety from STDs.
- Women should always clean their vagina to prevent the risk of contracting an STD. Men should also keep their private parts clean.
