For 27-year-old Rajiv Nanda was a highly successful software engineer who had a secure job in the US. His life was like the proverbial paradise. Rajiv was the typical alpha male, a leader at work, extremely popular among the boys. Working hard and partying harder were his things. He seemed to be a magnet for all the good things in life. Things seemed to come very easily to him, as though they were all destined for him. He appeared to be truly blessed. He could afford the latest gizmos, cars travel and live each day like a king.

His not so young boss and many other seniors envied his success. But they shared an amicable bond that of mentoring and grooming. And were always vocal about him being their blue-eyed boy. But Rajiv had to grapple with a deeply personal problem. He was too ashamed to speak about or discuss even with his elder brother. Little did Rajiv know that if he had opened up to his elder brother he would have realized that the latter had also been through the same turmoil. In fact, things would have been easier. Because Rajiv would have got much-needed timely advice, but unfortunately he had deprived himself, merely due to his embarrassment at voicing his inability to get and keep an erection for the appropriate amount of time for sexual intercourse.

Premature Ejaculation and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction ran in the family and not only was Rajiv was unaware that he and his brother suffered from it, neither of the brothers knew that their common ailment was due to varied reasons. While for his brother decreased libido was due to hormonal imbalance, for Rajiv, it was a result of an extremely unhealthy lifestyle with sky-rocketing stress as the major inhibitor. According to Rajiv, he wrongly thought that he needed treatment for Premature Ejaculation (PE). He didn’t know that people commonly confused them with each other.

Difference between Premature Ejaculation and Erectile Dysfunction

  • Getting an erection: In PE, getting an erection suitable for sexual intercourse isn’t a problem. Erectile dysfunction, on the other hand, is about an inability to get or keep an erection for sexual intercourse.
  • Keeping an erection: The penis remains erect until ejaculation, in PE, but this is not the case in erectile dysfunction. The penis softens before ejaculation or the end of intercourse.
  • Ejaculation: As the term suggests, ejaculation occurs earlier that it should, in PE. Whereas, in erectile dysfunction, men try to ejaculate before an erection is lost.

The National Institute of Health estimates that a mere 5% of 40-year-old men suffer from erectile dysfunction but with advancing age, the problem also gains monumental strides. 25% of 65-year-old men suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Unfortunately for Rajiv, he battled this on his own and his anxiety created more stress. That, in turn, affected his sexual performance. It was like a vicious cycle, some sort of chakravhyu he couldn’t break free from. Reading up on the net wasn’t a solution and had he sought a sexologist or a urologist, he would have been advised right at the beginning that:

Erectile Dysfunction is one of the causes of premature ejaculation. Sex therapists maintain that erectile dysfunction could be one of the causes of premature ejaculation when men who are anxious about obtaining or maintaining an erection during sexual intercourse may form a pattern of rushing to ejaculate.

Not just this, a counselor would have revealed him how 43% of men finish the sex act under two minutes while its average length is around 7.3 minutes.

 Several biological causes for PE

  • Thyroid
  • Abnormal level of neurotransmitters
  • Inflammation/infection of prostate/urethra
  • Nerve damage due to surgery

Rajiv, however, did try to research about testosterone levels. However, he had not correctly identified his problem, which could have been easily done with help from a certified Urologist and Andrologist. He would have found solace with the fact that failure to achieve an erection more than 50% of the time is when men should opt for treatment and that there are 30 million men like him who suffer from erectile dysfunction.

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Fatigue
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Hypogonadism or low testosterone levels
  • Being overweight
  • Radiation therapy to testicles
  • Depression
  • Medication for high blood pressure
  • Stroke
