What are the different Tips to Induce Periods?
Substances that help in inducing menstrual periods are known as emmenagogues. Some of the ways to induce menstrual periods are:
Vitamin C:
- Vitamin C or ascorbic acid can help in increasing estrogen levels and reducing progesterone levels (female sex hormones).
- This helps in the contraction of the uterus (womb) and the uterine lining to break down, thereby inducing periods.
- Some foods that are rich in vitamin C include berries, citrus fruits, broccoli, spinach, black currants, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, red and green peppers.
- Vitamin C supplements can also be taken as per the doctor’s recommended dose.
Turmeric:
- Turmeric is a traditional, natural remedy that is known to work by affecting progesterone and estrogen levels.
- Turmeric can be added to the food you eat or can be consumed with warm milk or water.
Ginger:
- Ginger consumption is a traditional method for inducing periods.
- It is believed to cause uterine contractions and induce bleeding.
- Ginger can be boiled in water, strained, and consumed in the form of ginger tea. It can also be added to food or eaten raw.
Pineapple:
- Pineapple is a rich source of the enzyme bromelain, which affects the estrogen hormone.
- Bromelain helps in reducing inflammation and helps in treating irregular periods that occur due to inflammation.
Parsley:
- Parsley is rich in vitamin C and apiol, which helps in the stimulation of uterine contractions.
- Parsley tea can be prepared by pouring a cup of boiling water over a few tablespoons of fresh parsley. Allow it to steep for five minutes and then drink it.
- However, apiol is toxic in certain amounts. Therefore, parsley should not be consumed if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or have kidney disorders.
Herbal supplements:
- Herbal supplements like dong quai and black cohosh can be used to induce a period.
- Dong Quai can help in inducing a period by improving the blood flow to the pelvis (region below the stomach) region and stimulating the uterine muscles to trigger uterine contractions.
- Black cohosh helps to tone the uterus and shedding of the uterine lining. It helps in regulating the menstrual cycle. It is however not recommended in people who are taking heart or blood pressure medications, or have liver diseases.
Stress management:
- Hormones like cortisol or adrenaline are produced when one is stressed.
- The above hormones can inhibit the production of female sex hormones, which are essential to maintain a regular menstrual cycle.
- This can cause missed or delayed periods.
- One can use various relaxation techniques to reduce stress, like exercising, meditation, reducing workload, spending more time with your loved ones, or pursuing an enjoyable hobby.
- Relaxation techniques can reduce stress and induce a period.
Sex:
- Having an orgasm during sexual activity can cause the dilation of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus).
- This creates the formation of a vacuum that can help in pulling the menstrual blood down.
- Sex can also help in reducing stress and promoting a healthy hormonal balance. This also helps in inducing periods.
Warm bath or compress:
- A warm bath helps in relaxing the tightened muscles and relieving stress.
- Scented oil can be added to a warm water bath for an added effect.
- A warm compress like a hot water bottle applied to the abdomen also helps in increasing the blood flow to the area and gently helps in the acceleration of the menstrual cycle.
Moderate exercises:
- Moderate exercises are good for general health and regulation of a normal menstrual cycle.
- However, too much exercise can lead to delayed, irregular, or missed periods.
- Too much exercise can decrease estrogen levels and cause the periods to stop. It is a problem often seen in athletes, runners, and weight lifters.
Hormonal contraceptives or birth control pills:
- Irregular periods can be treated using birth control pills.
- It helps in controlling the levels of the hormones in the body.
- It may have some side effects and must be used only as per the recommendation of the doctor.
