Established in 1977, The Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre has been a pioneering department in the country in this speciality. Nuclear Medicine department enables the diagnosis of Cancer, Cardiac, Neurological and Infective Disease. One of the first departments in Nuclear Medicine in the private sector, it has several firsts to its credit: Padmabhushan Dr R.D. Lele, the founder director of the department introduced Nuclear Cardiology with MUGA scans for the first time in the country. The department introduced brain perfusion imaging in India and recently imaging for Parkinson's disease for the first time in India.The department has just acquired the most advanced 5 ring 16 slice PET-CT scanner. Only 13 such machines exist in the world. With this scanner the time taken for a PET-CT scan is very short and the injected radiotracer is reduced by half, decreasing radiation exposure to the patient.

Dr. Vikram R. Lele is the Director, Department of Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT at the Jaslok Hospital &Research; Centre. Dr Vikram Lele did MD (medicine) in 1986 with 2 gold medals, followed by DRM and DNB (nuclear medicine). Dr Lele got further training in Nuclear Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical institutions, USA and in Germany. Dr Vikram Lele is on the editorial board of the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular imaging (EJNMMI) and the Indian Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Dr Vikram Lele is on the SARCAR committee of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of Govt. of India. Dr Vikram Lele has pioneered several new tests and therapies in Nuclear Medicine in India.

About Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre,Mumbai

The Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is one of the oldest tertiary care, multi-specialty Trust hospitals of the country and is NABH Accredted.

In the late 60s, when the establishment of large private hospitals was not common, the institution was conceptualized & endowed to the city of Mumbai by Seth Lokoomal Chanrai. Jaslok Hospital is situated at Dr. G Deshmukh Marg, Peddar Road which is a main artery of South Mumbai and overlooking the Arabian Sea. The hospital was inaugurated on 6th July 1973 by the erstwhile Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi.


Jaslok Hospital is a private, full-fledged multi-speciality hospital with 364 beds of which 75 are ICU beds. The number of consultants has increased from the initial 50 to around 265 with 140 fully trained resident doctors.
