PICC Line Insertion

 Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter or “PICC” is a thin, flexible & soft IV line to give medications or draw blood for blood tests. It is inserted just above the bend of elbow & is guided into a large vein in the chest. Once placed a Chest X-ray is taken to make sure its position & then it is secured with a tape & sterile bandages.

  • Chest X-ray
  • Blood test
  • Ultrasound
  • Usually done in X-ray room.
  • The patient is made to lie on back & the area of insertion is cleaned.
  • The skin around is numbed with medication to avoid pain.
  • An ultrasound is used to guide the needle in the vein chosen. 
  • First needle is inserted followed by a guide wire & catheter. These are moved to the pre determined spot.
  • The site of needle puncture is slightly enlarged.
