Introduction

Dr. Avtar S Matharoo is a Consultant at Fortis Hospital, Mohali since 2008, with a total experience of more than 20 years in the field as a specialist, besides another 10 years as a doctor. Dr Matharoo did his MBBS and MD Anesthesia from IG Medical College, Shimla and residency courses at Shimla, Delhi and Budapest, Hungary. Dr Avtar S took first pain management lessons at AIIMS, New Delhi and Kolkata amongst a long list of world-renowned contemporaries. He has taken training in palliative care through a certificate course from Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC) from PGIMER, Chandigarh. Dr Matharoo was a first doctor in North India to receive an International Fellowship in Pain Management, FIPP (Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice) from World Institute of Pain (WIP), Texas, USA. He is accredited with performing many latest and indigenous procedures and has performed ‘Cervical Nucleoplasty’ for the first time in the Indian subcontinent. He has performed the highest number of micro-invasive procedures on prolapsed discs, viz. Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy, Hydrocision, Biacuplasty & Coblation etc. He has also performed the largest series of Trigeminal Neuralgia treatment by percutaneous Radiofrequency rhizotomy in North India. Dr Matharoo is a pioneer in performing ultra-micro invasive treatment for prolapsed discs ‘Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy’ through a 6mm cut under local anesthesia and same day discharge. This procedure has been projected as the next 'GOLD STANDARD' in disc diseases. Dr Matharoo has been invited as an honorary faculty and chairperson at national and international level pain conferences and has around a dozen publications in his name. He is also involved in many charity programmes for the welfare of poor and down trodden at national and international levels. He has visited various parts of India and many African countries in this regard.
