Varicose Veins Surgery

Varicose vein surgery is a procedure involving removal or blocking of varicose veins. Varicose veins occur when veins fail to circulate blood and become enlarged and dilated and overfilled with blood. Varicose veins can be extremely painful if severe and may thwart a patient’s normal functioning which poses a need for surgery.

Symptoms:

  • Appearance of heavy, bulging veins most commonly in the lower leg
  • Discolored veins, often blue or dark purple in colour
  • Pain, heaviness, cramping, itching and aching around the veins
  • Bleeding from the veins which can lead to formation of ulcers
  • Inability to sit or stand for a long time due to pain

Diagnosis:

A simple examination from the doctor can determine whether one has varicose veins. The doctor would generally examine a patient when they are standing or seated and inquire about the symptoms that the patient may be experiencing. An ultrasound might also be needed to check the blood flow in the body. A venogram may also be suggested. A venogram is a test that makes the veins visible on an X-ray with the help of a contrast dye.

Treatment:

Doctors usually suggest lifestyle changes and more non invasive methods when treating varicose veins. However, if the condition is too severe, and is harmful to the patient’s health, surgery may be required. There are a few different types of options available for treating varicose veins as listed below:

  • Vein stripping and ligation - this involves the removal of veins through incisions. The varicose vein is cut and then removed through the incisions (at least two) in the skin. Anesthesia needs to be administered during this procedure
  • Endoscopic vein surgery - An incision is formed near the vein and a camera with a surgical device attached to it is inserted through this incision. Once inside, this device is then used to close the vein. This is only used when the problem is severe and the varicose veins lead to skin ulcers.
  • Laser surgery - it is a non-invasive procedure which uses a laser to block the vein.
  • Endovenous ablation therapy – uses a small incision through which a catheter is introduced into the vein and it is blocked off by heating the vein.

Complications:

Invasive procedures like vein stripping can cause symptoms like severe pain, swelling and bruising. It can also cause blood clots and infections in rare cases. Other procedures however, do not involve many risks and complications.

Post Procedure

Procedures like vein stripping and ligation and endoscopic vein surgery require a rest and recovery period of anywhere between 1-4 weeks. Patients opting for treatments like laser surgery and ablation can go home the same day and return to normal activities within a couple days. Certain lifestyle changes may be advised by the doctor to prevent and minimalize effects of varicose veins.
