Achalasia is a rare condition where the esophagus ( food pipe ) is not able to pass the food and liquids down to the stomach. In this condition the LES ( lower esophageal sphincter ) of the food pipe does not open adequately, because of which the food gets stuck in the lower part of the food pipe. This condition occurs due to the damage of the nerves supplyng the LES.
