Treatment

These are some common back surgeries:

Discectomy It is a procedure done to remove the damaged discs & is usually of two types:

  1. Microsurgical: Through a small incision, the damaged portion of the disc is removed along with a small portion of bone covering spinal cord by using a microscope.
  2. Percutaneous: A small incision is made in the back. A laser or a suction device is used to remove a portion of the disc through a narrow probe.

Laminectomy It is performed to enlarge the spinal column when there is pressure on the nerve roots due to spinal stenosis. Lamina which forms a roof over the spinal cord is removed along with bony protrusions or spurs.

Spinal Fusion: A bone like material is placed between two vertebrae which may be secured with plates, screws & rods so that they can heal into one unit. It mimics the normal healing process of a broken bone. It immobilizes those parts of the spine. Hence can lead to additional stress & strain on the vertebrae above & below the fused portion.

Kyphoplasty Under anesthesia, with X-ray guidance a needle is inserted through the skin into the bones & then a balloon is inflated to help the vertebrae regain its shape. It may take some time if more than one vertebra is treated.

  • Bleeding
