Dr P Jagannath graduated from Kurnool Medical College, SV University, India in 1978 with 10 medals. After postgraduate residency in General Surgery at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) he obtained MS (General Surgery) from University of Madras, India in 1982. Dr Jagannath joined Tata Memorial Hospital, largest Comprehensive Cancer Center in India in 1983. His primary interest is Gastrointestinal Oncology He was the Professor of Surgical Oncology & Chief, Gastrointestinal Service, Tata Memorial Centre till 2002. He then joined as Chairman, Surgical Oncology, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, rated among top ten multi specialty hospital in India. He was the earliest in India to specialize in the field of Liver tumors - resection and non-resectional therapies - including RF ablation; Gall Bladder cancer - epidemiology, multimodal treatment and surgery; Pancreatic resections; Sphincter conservation for rectal cancer. He has carried out maximum number of Whipple's operations and complex HPB oncologic surgeries in India with low mortality. Dr. Jagannath was instrumental in the growth of HPB surgery in India. He conducted international workshops in the field of HPB surgery in 1996. He initiated Indian Chapter of IHPB as its founder Secretary 2001- 2005 and President 2007 - 2009. He was President of Asian Pacific HPB Association(A-PHPBA) in 2011 - 2013.

Pioneer Cancer surgeon and started Hepato Biliary Pancreatic Surgery in India in 1985. Maximum Number of Pancreatic Surgery (Whipple’s operations) in country. Well known for his technique in Liver surgery. Introduced advanced techniques of sphincter conservation, staplers in treatment of Gastrointestinal cancers. Hundreds of patients of all classes from all parts of India and abroad seek his surgical expertise. Established Indian Chapter of International Hepato Biliary Association (IHPBA) in 2000. Conducted an Epidemiological Survey of Cancer Gall Bladder in the Gangetic Basin in collaboration with International Institute of Population Sciences and paper published. Launched a Nonprofit Charitable trust “Crusade Against Cancer Foundation” in 2001. His social contributions are well known as detailed. Member of team performing the first Bone marrow transplantation in India. Largest experience in Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET) started Asia-Pacific NET Registry. Dr. Jagannath received ‘Swastha Bharat Samman’ Award as a well known cancer surgeon by Zee News and LIC on 9/3/2013 from the Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad. President IHPBA (International HepatoPancreato Biliary Association) in 2012 at the 10th World Congress of IHPBA – 1st Indian to be honored by election. Past President Asian Pacific HPBA (International Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association) September 2011. Organizing Chairman, 8th World Congress of IHPBA. IHPBA 2008 was acclaimed as the best and the biggest World Congress of IHPBA to date and was attended by over 1600 delegates from 65 different countries. President of HPB training, Education, Research Foundation Established Indian Chapter of International Hepato Biliary Association (IHPBA) in 2000.
