Procedure Details

Breast Reduction Surgery is a surgical procedure done to remove excess fat/tissue to achieve a proportionate breast size. Also known as Reduction Mammoplasty, it is essential in cases of very large breasts and even in gynecomastia.

The conditions in which a Breast Reduction Surgery is required are:
  • Back pain
  • Chronic neck & shoulder pain
  • Severe skin irritation
  • Rashes
  • Deep grooves from bra strap pressure
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Restricted physical activity

Prior to a Breast Reduction Surgery, it is essential to carry out the following diagnostic methods:

  • Physical examination
  • Medical examination
  • Mammography

For larger reduction, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia while smaller reductions can be done under local anesthesia. One or more incisions are placed on the breast to remove excess skin or tissue. Areola and nipples may have to be removed & repositioned if required. The skin is then closed with stitches.

The risks involved in a Reduction Mammoplasty are:

  • Scarring
  • Inability to breast feed
  • Loss of sensation
  • Asymmetry in the size of breasts

After a Breast Reduction Surgery, it is essential to keep in mind the following:

  • Wear a bra that supports the breasts well
  • Keep away strenuous exercise
