Dr. V. Satyaprasad graduated in 1977 and completed his master’s in General Surgery in 1982 at Govt. Stanley Medical College, University of Madras, Chennai, India. He underwent post doctoral training in cardiovascular surgery at Tashkent State Institute of Medical Sciences, Uzbekistan (former USSR) in 1985. He then joined the Madras Medical Mission and worked there as a consultant till 1998. He then pursued a three month fellowship in cardio-thoracic and vascular surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Portland, Oregon, USA, in 1990, under Prof. Albert Star. He also trained in mitral valve repair under Prof. Alan Carpentier, Prof. Stephen Bolling, and Prof. Thawasee Chotivatanapong. In 1998, he moved to Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, established the department of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, and worked as consultant and chief cardiovascular surgeon. He was promoted as a professor of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in 2008 at the Amrita School of Medicine under Amrita Vishwavidyapeetham (Amrita University), Cochin. He has performed more than 15,000 cardiac surgical procedures. His main interests include surgery for ischemic heart disease, valve reconstruction, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, surgery for heart failure and cardiac transplantation.
