Axillary Breast Surgery

The axillary breast tissues are characterized by the growth of the fat tissues, lymph nodes, or glandular tissues of the breast in the underarm region.
Axillary breast tissue can be extremely painful and lead to discomfort. The look and feel of axillary breasts can also be bothersome. The axillary breast needs to be removed by surgery, which will enable a person to eliminate saggy armpit fat.

Symptoms:
Axillary breast tissue may lead to the following symptoms and may indicate the need for treatment:

  1. Restricted arm movements
  2. Inability to maintain a proper posture of the arm
  3. Pain in the lump
  4. Pain along the inner arm
  5. Aesthetic problems
  6. Inability to wear certain clothes

  1. Physical examination: The doctor will examine the tissue growth and look at the possible external composition of the tissue growth to find the exact cause of the armpit lump.
  2. Ultrasonography: The images of the internal body structures can be obtained using this test. The nature of the swelling, the content of the swelling, and possible vascular connection of the tissues can be evaluated using this test.
  3. Mammography: This test is recommended as a routine examination to rule out the presence of any breast pathology.
  4. Color Doppler: Two different ultrasound waves are used to check the flow of blood and if there is any vascular swelling in the underarm area.
  5. MRI scan: If another pathology, such as malignancy or lymphadenopathy, is suspected, the doctor will recommend an MRI scan.

Axillary breast tissue can be removed using any one of the following techniques:

  1. Liposuction: This procedure is performed when the breast lumps are small.
  2. Excision: This technique is preferred when large masses can be removed through a tiny incision.
  3. Axilla Plasty: This procedure will combine excision and liposuction to correct the skin and fat overhang in the underarm area.

The procedure is performed in the following way:

  1. The doctor will administer local anesthesia to numb the treatment area to perform liposuction or general anesthesia to put the patient to sleep during to perform excision surgery.
  2. The surgeon will then mark the location of the incision and insert the needle for liposuction in the target area. If the surgeon is using a laser for liposuction, a laser fiber is inserted in the target area.
  3. The fat in the underarm will be broken down and extracted by using a suction device.
  4. If the breast glandular tissue has reached the underarm region, the surgeon could use a scalpel or laser for excising the tissues through a 3 to 4-cm incision.
  5. The incisions are then closed using stitches or surgical glue, and a dressing is then placed on the wound.
  6. Sometimes, the surgeon may also place drains before suturing.

The complications associated with axillary breast tissue removal surgery are:

  • Pain
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Nerve injury
  • Bleeding
  • Separation of the wound
  • Seroma (accumulation of fluid)
  • Hematoma (accumulation of blood)
  1. The patient is usually discharged on the same day after surgery.
  2. It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and numbness for a few weeks after surgery.
  3. The shoulder and arm movement will be restricted for some time as scar tissue formation will start around the incision area. The doctor will recommend doing certain arm exercises during this period.
  4. You will have a follow-up appointment with your doctor within the first two weeks after surgery, in which the doctor will monitor your recovery and the possibility of any complications. You will also be instructed on which medicines to take and which medicines can be discontinued.
  5. Regular follow-up appointments are recommended in the future.
