Coronary angioplasty or Per cutaneous coronary intervention is commonly used to open the arteries that are either narrowed or blocked in the heart. A stent (small, metal mesh tube) is inserted into the artery and a balloon attached at the end is inflated to crush the plaque that is clogging the arteries.
A small incision is made in groin area or arm to access an artery, then a thin flexible tube called catheter is inserted through the incision to the coronary artery with the help of special X-ray called fluoroscopy.
A small wire is passed through catheter and a second catheter along with stent follows it with a small balloon attached to it; once it reaches the blocked artery the surgeon inflates it. Now the plaque is crushed and stent helps in maintaining the artery open.
