Laser Circumcision Surgery

Diagnosis

1. Physical examination: The doctor will check the patient physically and ask the patient about any symptoms that he may be having. The patient’s medical history is also noted.
2. Swab: A swab culture may be taken from the glans penis to check for any sexually transmitted diseases that may be present.
3. Urine culture: This test helps to detect any urinary tract infections (UTIs) that may be present.
4. Blood test: The test helps in diagnosing or ruling out any medical infections that the patient may be having.

 

Treatment

• Laser circumcision surgery may be performed under local anesthesia, in which the treatment area is numbed, or general anesthesia, in which the patient is put to sleep during the procedure, depending on the amount of foreskin that needs to be removed from the penis.
• Once the area around the penis gets numb, the doctor stretches the penile foreskin from the front using two pairs of forceps.
• An electrocautery device is then used to remove the excess shaft of the foreskin from the penis using a laser beam.
• The high-intensity laser helps in precisely cutting the skin while securing the edges of the skin to prevent bleeding.
• The urologist will then put a bandage to secure the site of surgery after the removal of the foreskin.
• The procedure takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
• Once the anesthesia effect wears off and the patient shows no signs of complications, the patient can usually go home.

• It is normal to feel some discomfort after a laser circumcision surgery, which can be managed by the medications provided by the urologist.
• The patient should keep his surgical site dry and clean to reduce the chances of infection.
• The patient should avoid indulging in any sexual activities for three to four weeks after the procedure, or as suggested by the doctor.
• The urologist will recommend certain medications, which need to be taken meticulously to aid in quicker recovery.
