A Race Against Time: A Heart Transplant Story - 2nd February 2019

This is a true tale of a 48-year old lady who was registered at Medanta for the heart transplant program. She was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and was at the end-stage of heart failure. The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) notified Medanta about an altruistic brain dead donor at a hospital in Indore whose blood group matched with the lady. The heart transplant team activated the transplant protocols and the patient was admitted and anti-rejection measures were initiated.

At the same time, the heart transplant team headed by Dr. Anil Bhan was flown to Indore. They soon harvested the organ and moved it to a transport mechanism which was airlifted and driven to through three different states. Green Corridors, roads with manually operated street signals to avoid peak traffic for emergencies, mainly medical emergencies, were created within Indore covering a distance of 11 Km in barely nine minutes. Another Green Corridor was created from IGI airport to Medanta-The Medicity covering 18 km in 16 minutes.

The heart was successfully transplanted to the receiver within a record time of three hours fifty minutes from the time the organ was harvested. The patient was shifted to the CCU where she recovered well under the watchful eyes of the team.
