Aneurysm is a swelling of the aorta. A surgical intervention involving a man-made graft is required when there is a large abdominal or thoracic aneurysm which is enlarging rapidly and is at risk of rupturing.
It can be done in two ways:
Open Repair: a large incision in made in abdomen to expose the aneurysm,& then a man-made graft is used to replace it. Often used in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.
Endovascular Aneurysm Repair: It is minimally invasive technique where a small incision is made in groin to introduce a catheter through which instruments are introduced to place a stent and the graft which supports the aneurysm.
