Cardioversion is a procedure to treat arrhythmia by sending electric shocks to the heart through an electrode that is placed on the chest.
With an IV line, anesthesia is given after which electrodes are placed on the chest and most probably on the back. The cardioversion machine is attached to these electrodes. This machine records the heart's activity, and when necessary the doctor sends one or more low energy shocks to restore the normal rhythm.
Blood thinning medications are prescribed for several weeks to prevent any blood clot formation.
