What is Broccoli? 

Broccoli is commonly called green cauliflower in India. Broccoli is a vegetable which resembles cabbage and cauliflower. The leaves of broccoli are bitter in taste and cannot be eaten. Broccoli contains numerous nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, calcium, potassium and antioxidants. They keep the body strong and prevent diseases.

What is the correct way to cook broccoli? 

  • Broccoli can be consumed at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is used in numerous food preparations such as salad and eaten with rice, roti and paratha.  
  • Method of cooking broccoli: Cut the broccoli and separate its stalk and the flowers. Then, wash it thoroughly with water. 
  • Keep a vessel full of water on the gas stove and when the water starts boiling, take out the broccoli and chop it. 
  • When the water starts boiling, its color turns light green and the stalk becomes soft. Get the broccoli by using a sieve.  
  • Place a pan on the gas stove and add butter to it. After the butters melt, add onion, garlic, green chilies, cumin and ginger. Cook it well. 
  • Now add salt and the boiled broccoli into the pan and mix well. Add lemon and let the mixture cook for a while. 
  • After some time, serve the broccoli into a bowl and add chopped coriander to garnish. The broccoli is ready to eat.

  • Broccoli contains a compound called Sulforaphane that prevents cancer. Cancer patients must consume broccoli.  
  • Rich in potassium, magnesium and antioxidants, broccoli controls high blood pressure.
