The symptoms of a loose vagina may include the following:

  • Sexual discomfort
  • Leakage of urine
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal odor
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pelvic pain
  1. Physical examination: You will be examined physically by the doctor. Your medical history, sexual history, and history of childbirth is noted. You will also be asked about any recent injury that you may have had.
  2. Pelvic exam: The doctor inserts one or two lubricated, gloved fingers into your vagina to check for the elasticity of the vaginal muscles along with the condition of the other internal female reproductive organs.
  3. Ultrasound: This test involves the use of sound waves to obtain clear pictures of the internal female reproductive organs of a body.
  4. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan: This test involves the use of a strong magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed pictures of the female reproductive organs.

The various type of treatments recommended for a loose vagina are:

1. Non-surgical treatment: The different types of non-surgical treatments include:
a) Kegel exercises: These are pelvic floor muscle exercises that can be performed to tighten a loose vagina.
b) Pelvic tilt exercises: These types of exercises can be performed by standing straight with the butt and shoulders against the wall and pulling the belly button in towards the spine.
c) Creams, gels, and pills: There are several vaginal tightening gels, creams, and pills available in the market that claim to tighten the vaginal wall. But they do not help in relieving any symptoms associated with a loose vagina, like urinary incontinence. It is important to consult your doctor before using any of these products.
d) Vaginal cones: The muscles of the pelvic floor can be strengthened by using a vaginal cone, which is a tampon-sized object that can be inserted into the vagina.
e) Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES): A probe is used in this procedure to send an electric current through the pelvic floor. The electrical stimulation provided causes the contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles
f) Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser treatment: This procedure involves inserting a probe into the vagina to heat the vaginal tissue gently and contract the existing collagen fibers to stimulate the production of new collagen.
g) Radio-frequency therapy: The procedure involves the use of a small disposable wand to deliver pain-free radiofrequency energy to heat the vaginal tissue gently, causing little or no discomfort. The procedure helps in the treatment of loose vagina, vaginal dryness, and incontinence, and to improve bladder control.

2. Surgical treatment:
Vaginoplasty: This is a type of surgery performed to tighten a loose vagina. This procedure is done under sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. It involves either pulling the pelvic floor muscles closer together and removing any excess and loose skin, or a combination of both. This results in a restructured and tighter vagina.

If a loose vagina is left untreated, it may lead to the following problems:

  1. Vaginal dryness
  2. Urinary incontinence (inability to control the urge to urinate)
  3. Constant itching around the vaginal area
  4. Foul smell due to bacterial infection
  5. Abscess (pus) formation
  6. Vaginal rupture

The risks associated with a vaginal tightening surgery are:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clot formation
  • Chronic or long-term dryness
  • Less sensitivity around the vagina
  • Numbness in and around the vagina
  • Pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse

The following are the post-procedure steps following a vaginal tightening surgery:

  • You will be mostly discharged on the same day of the surgery.
  • It is normal to have mild pain and swelling after a vaginoplasty.
  • You will have mild vaginal bleeding for about four to eight weeks after the surgery.
  • A vaginal dilator may be provided by the doctor, which can be used after the bandages are removed. The vaginal dilator should be used daily for at least one year after surgery to maintain the desired vaginal girth and depth.
  • You may resume work about one week after surgery.

Home remedies:

  • The doctor will prescribe certain painkillers after surgery to relieve your discomfort. These medicines need to be taken as recommended by the doctor.
  • Ice pack application is advised for about 20 minutes every hour for one week following the surgery.
  • Avoid having sexual intercourse for at least three months following the surgery.
  • Avoid swimming and hot water bath for at least eight weeks after the surgery.
  • Avoid strenuous exercises and lifting heavy objects for at least six weeks after the surgery.
  • Avoid inserting anything into the vagina, including tampons, during the recovery period.
  • Avoid smoking for at least one month after surgery.
  • Avoid riding a cycle or motorcycle for at least three months following surgery.
