Vagus Nerve Stimulation

The stimulation of the Vagus nerve with electrical impulses through an implantation device is called Vagus nerve stimulation. It is often used in complex cases of depression and epilepsy which have not responded to typical therapies.

Diagnosis

Prior to a Vagus Nerve Stimulation treatment, the following diagnostic methods must be performed:

  • Physical examination
  • Medical history
  • EEG
  • Persistent epilepsy

Treatment

An implantation device is placed underneath the skin just below the left collar bone or close to the armpit. Two tiny wires are attached to the vagus nerve through a second small incision made in the neck. This device sends small electrical impulses to the brain & helps to prevent the abnormal activity that causes seizures. The pulse generator generates impulses at intervals (24 hrs/day).

Risks

The risks involved in a Vagus nerve stimulation treatment are:

  • Chest pain
  • Throat pain
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Damage to Vagus nerve

After Procedure

It is essential to have regular follow-ups every 6 weeks to check the stimulator settings & battery life.
